FLOWERS

I’ve painted flowers for as long as I can remember, always exploring new ways to push the boundaries of abstraction.

Each painting starts with simple inspirations - flowers from the garden, placed in a vase on the table; window boxes overflowing with ranunculus, spring bulbs growing in glass jars. , or hydrangeas bathed in strong light, casting deep shadows.

I don’t paint flowers from life. Instead, they come entirely from my memory, evolving as I work. Each composition becomes a puzzle to solve, a way to balance form, colour, and marks while staying true to the plant's essence.

Light and shadow play a big part in my work, evoking both the joy of sunlight and the melancholic beauty of a fading day. The contrast between light and dark mirrors the joy of life intertwined with the inevitability of loss.

I wonder if the flowers are metaphors for people or emotions I’m processing. The vases may symbolise safety and nurture, while a fallen petal represents the passage of time. Whether it’s a good day or a bad one, these moments, like the petals, are temporary. This too shall pass.
